Super stoked to bring the topic to the fore front of why we do what we do. Chiropractic helps the expression of the nervous system, aka helping you live a fuller you.
A basic principle of chiropractic written and expressed by D.D. Palmer, the original founding father of chiropractic, life is the expression of tone. Tone is the degree to which a nerve, organ, musculoskeletal, etc holds based on its strength, excitability, normal elasticity, and activity. We can also understand tone by listening to various musical notes. Tone creates a feeling, a sound, and influences how we carry ourselves. Tone allows connection. We can sense who makes us feel safe and allows us to share relationships with. With chiropractic, the doctor is running their hands up and down the spine sensing the tone of the nervous system. Searching for areas under too much tension or where more stimulus is needed. This enables the doctor to know how clear communication is getting from the brain to the specific area that they were attuning too. When there is an interference, resulting in too much tension or too much slack, adjusting that area reestablishes the tone.Wall EJ et al performed a study on changes in nerve conduction under tension. When there was a 6% strain placed on a nerve, the amplitude of the action potential had decreased by 70%. An hour afterwards the amplitude was returned to normal. When a 12% strain was placed on a nerve, there was no conduction at all, and an hour following showed minimal recovery. When referring to conduction, it is the transfer of impulses between nerves being originally sent from the brain. When the tension was added, it decreased the availability for the impulse, the message to be fully delivered. Tone then alters our tensegrity. Too much strain or tension in an area calls upon the body to become protective, altering the tensegrity."Tensegrity is maintained in "a system that stabilizes itself mechanically because of the way tensional and compressive forces are distributed and balanced within the structure.” Breath work influences the mind to enter a parasympathetic tone, which relaxes the overall tone of the body. Tune in next time to discover more of the power of your breath.
